What do we have to show for 25 years of social movements and protests?

What do we have to show for 25 years of social movements and protests?

The Palestinian liberation movement is one of the last national liberation and decolonization struggles. The PSM resembles anti-imperialist, antiwar and solidarity movements since the Spanish Civil War, but for the first time since the 1930s the Marxist left is not central to organizing it. The PSM is also similar to the George Floyd movement in that it has raised mass awareness and discredited state violence, even as ruling-class interests and institutions struck back with police violence and political and legal repression. The challenge for the PSM is building power to disrupt US support for Israel – just as the antiwar movement did during the Vietnam War, which combined with Vietnamese resistance and armed struggle to defeat the American war effort. This requires organization, leadership and a mass movement that is broad, strategic, disciplined and refuses to compromise on Palestinian national liberation and ending Zionist settler-colonialism. But it also faces the same trap confronting all movements today. PSM protests are highly dependent on social media and can unleash mass disruptive power seemingly out of nowhere. But social media also determines the form of protests, and in particular the ephemeral viral tactics they adopt, making them almost impossible to organize and institutionalize in the very moment when they have the most influence.

Cut the genocidal supply: Join the BDS Global Week of Action against Elbit Systems | BDS Movement

Cut the genocidal supply: Join the BDS Global Week of Action against Elbit Systems | BDS Movement

The Palestinian-led BDS movement calls for global days of action from April 20 - 25, targeting Elbit Systems and its complicit supply chain. Elbit Systems is Israel's largest weapons manufacturer and primary supplier to Israel’s genocidal army. It develops, manufactures, and sells weapons, surveillance technology, and military equipment. These are used in Israel's ongoing genocide against Palestinians in Gaza, in its apartheid system against the entire Indigenous people of Palestine, and its ongoing criminal aggression against the peoples of the region.

Elbit Systems has been a primary target of the BDS movement’s Military Embargo campaign since 2007, and remains a priority target for BDS pressure and divestment campaigns. BDS-affiliated activists have peacefully occupied or blocked Elbit Systems factories in the UK and Brazil, including in a precedent-setting case near Birmingham (UK) in 2014.

Elbit is not just a weapons company — it is a cornerstone of Israel's military-industrial complex, directly profiting from and enabling Israel's apartheid regime and ongoing genocide against Palestinians. The company's drones and surveillance systems enable Israel’s precision bombing of residential areas, and its military vehicles and weapons systems are used in attacks on Gaza. Elbit’s border control technology enables Israel’s siege of 2.3 million Palestinians, and its training systems prepare Israeli forces for carrying out ethnic cleansing operations.

Trump’s budget for 2027, a breakdown - by Stephen Semler

Trump’s budget for 2027, a breakdown - by Stephen Semler
"The White House’s recent budget proposal outlines how the president wants to spend the public’s money next year. The gratuitous cuts to civilian agencies suggest the goal is smaller government. But that’s not the case — next year’s budget would still be $361 billion larger than last year’s. Trump’s concern isn’t the size of government; it’s what the government does and who it does it for.

So what does Trump want the government to do in 2027? More war, more (militarized) policing, and less of everything else. Based on his budget request, Trump sees little point in government outside performing those first two functions. War and policing receive record funding; funding for all other government functions is cut by $300 billion."

No kings — No Imperialism — No Capitalism - Stop the Wars at Home and Abroad!

What the global working class needs is for the masses in the belly of the beast to move beyond anti-Trump slogans and become firmly anti-imperialist. It’s not enough to say the war against Iran is somehow “bad for the U.S.

“Theodore W. Allen -- Theses on ‘The Invention of the White Race’ and Lessons from Three Crises” - YouTube

Theodore W. Allen (1919-2005) pioneered his “white skin privilege” analysis in 1965, co-authored "White Blindspot" in 1967 and authored the accompanying “Can White Workers/Radicals Be Radicalized?’” in 1969, wrote the ground-breaking Class Struggle and the Origin of Racial Slavery: The Invention of the White Race in 1974/1975, wrote the seminal two-volume "The Invention of the White Race" in 1994 and 1997 (since reprinted in new expanded form in 2012 by Verso Books) , and authored a number of other extremely important published and unpublished pieces.

His "The Invention of the White Race," with its focus on racial oppression and social control, is one of the twentieth-century's major contributions to historical understanding. This two-volume classic (Vol. 1: "Racial Oppression and Social Control" and Vol. 2: "The Origin of Racial Oppression in Anglo-America") details how the "white race" was invented as a ruling-class social control formation and a system of racial oppression was imposed in response to labor solidarity in the wake of Bacon's Rebellion (1676-77), how the "white race" was created and maintained through "white race" privileges conferred on laboring class European-Americans relative to African-Americans, how these privileges were not in the interest of African-Americans or laboring class European-Americans, and how the "white race" has been the principal historic guarantor of ruling-class domination in America.

This brief video presents three of Allen’s theses related to the invention of the “white race” and his important analysis of the white supremacy’s role in beating back struggles from below in three great crises in U.S. history.

Are Democrats Weak or Strong? | Be Freedom

American fascism was ALWAYS a bipartisan project.

"it cannot be missed that the Democrats have lots of power when it comes to containing, crushing, and co-opting opposition movements from Occupy and BLM 2020 to Standing Rock and the Sanders reform efforts. The Democrats had no problem flexing their muscles during the recent college protests in a frontal assault on free speech and assembly. Over 3,000 were arrested in a single spring in that supposed bastion of free thinking and dissent: the university. Harris pushed bi-partisan attacks on the peace movement when she smeared peace protestors as anti-semitic. Now it’s Trump’s turn."

No Kings and the Lure of Spectacle | Black Agenda Report

No Kings and the Lure of Spectacle | Black Agenda Report

There can’t be an effective movement if most people still believe that having a supposedly lesser evil party in the white house or Congress is the answer to fighting Trump, or that Trump himself is the cause of every problem, or that all was well before he won a presidential election for the second time. The organization Indivisible is a Democratic Party operation and its goal is to keep its voters in the fold. In short, No Kings was a national get out the vote operation for democrats, a party that is committed to offering very little in the way of political change. Rallies bereft of political demands create exactly what the Democratic Party wants, energized voters who will show up at the polls determined to choose “blue no matter who,” and in the process give them carte blanche to do as they and their oligarchic patrons please.

[SIGN-ON LETTER] Cancel the 2026 Seattle Defense Supplier Summit!

[SIGN-ON LETTER] Cancel the 2026 Seattle Defense Supplier Summit!

March 18-19 a major weapons conference is convening in Seattle. We say SHUT IT DOWN!

Mobilize with us March 18, 12p @ Seattle Convention Center (Arches building)

Tell Gov Ferguson to cancel and ban the Defense Supplier Summit! tinyurl.com/DSSOut Help us get 500 signatures by Wednesday!

Next week, over 700 companies from over 25 countries will be convening at the Aerospace & Defense Supplier Summit held at the Seattle Convention Center to participate in the business of war. These companies supply the parts for a deadly array of brutal weaponry. From attack helicopters to bomber planes, these weapons are used to terrorize the masses at home and abroad from Palestine to the Philippines, Venezuela to Iran. The companies at this summit stand to profit from every plane shipped and bomb dropped.

This is the 8th time the DSS is convening. Two years ago, we held a mass mobilization in protest which forced them onto zoom for the first day, in a major show of the people's strength. Now that DSS has decided to return, we are demanding that Governor Bob Ferguson, the Convention Center Board of Directors, and WA Dept of Commerce CANCEL and BAN this weapons conference from Washington.

Sign onto the petition linked at the top of this email and join ILPS and allies on March 18th 12p at the Arches Seattle Convention Center for a mass action to show that Seattle wants DSS shut down!

If you'd like to support this action, you can donate via Venmo to @ILPSsea (yellow flag profile picture)

Follow along on instagram @ilps.seattle.tacoma for more updates and details on the action.

SPEECH: White Supremacy in U.S. History, Theodore W. Allen April 28, 1973 | Black Agenda Report

If the fatal flaw of the white left has been the inability — indeed, the refusal — to account for white supremacy, one of the few white leftists to overcome this flaw was Theodore W. Allen (August 23, 1919 – January 19, 2005).
